Poland’s defence minister has signed a deal giving the government control of one of the country’s biggest private and business cyber-security and fibre-optic network providers.

poland_news_internet takeoverAntoni Macierewicz put pen to paper on the deal with Polska Grupa Energetyczna (PGE) on the sale of Exatel, which places all shares in the latter in the hands of the Polish Treasury at a cost of 368.5 million złoty.

A statement issued by PGE in connection with the sale of Exatel to the Treasury reads: “The Management Board of PGE Polska Grupa Energetyczna S.A. discloses that on March 29, 2017 the company signed the agreement for the sale of 100% of shares in Exatel S.A. to the State Treasury of Poland”.

Exatel’s website boasts of 20 years in the industry, during which it has become the “bridge that connects the east and west of Europe”.

With a data transmission network of nearly 20,000 km, Exatel owns one of the most extensive infrastructures in Poland. It utilises connection points in London and Frankfurt to provide fibre-optic data transfer services not just in Poland, but across Europe, and operates in conjunction with 150 international operators.

Exatel has a reputation too as a provider of cyber-security services, protecting clients against everything from denial of service attacks to data leaks. The company website says it can offer “a new team monitoring your infrastructure 24/7”, rather than simply offering hardware solutions.

As of March 29, the company and its capabilities have been under the complete control of the Polish government.

A statement released by Exatel after the conclusion of the sale said: “We will continue to operate as a commercial entity both in Poland and abroad”.
